Chapter Three

Toby glanced at his wristwatch for what seemed like the thousandth time. Each ticking second that passed did wonders for his mounting frustration. Half an hour of his life wasted waiting for a man who wouldn’t show up. Rejection was familiar ground to Toby, but crushing disappointment was new. Painful, like someone cut a hole inside him and yanked out his innards.

Jesus. Not worth it, getting depressed over a pathetic situation, but he couldn’t help himself.

“Had me fooled there for a second, asshole. Are you smirking right now, bragging to your friends how you played a trick on the weak, fat little wolf that mouthed off to you in the gym?” Toby grabbed the keys on the counter and furiously stalked out of the shop. “You’re no different from everyone else, killer or not.”

What possessed him to think Dev didn’t have any hidden ulterior motives? Because he didn’t look like he was acting? That it was impossible to manufacture the look of desire on his face, because no one had ever looked at Toby that way before?

“Screw this. Fuck you, Dev Walker.” Toby’s hands shook with rage. It took several tries for the winery key to slot into the lock. “You think I’m going to just stand around and let you have your last laugh? You picked the wrong guy to off, buddy.”

Toby got into his car and drove up to Sal and Kal’s apartment. Since New Haven wasn’t big by any means, it took him less than fifteen minutes to arrive. Toby fumed, marched up the apartment stairs and rapped his knuckles painfully against the front door. A curse sounded from inside, followed by Kal’s growl. “If you’re selling something, I’ll fucking kill you.”

“Kal!” Sal warned.

The door swung opened. Kal blinked down at Toby. “What are you doing here? Shouldn’t you and Dev be out on a date?”

Toby tried not to let Kal’s large and imposing figure dissuade him. “Funny. Thought that too, but he never showed. If he thought for a second I’d let him play his fucking cruel game—”

“He’s not with you?” Kal interrupted. Something in Kal’s voice distracted Toby, made him think past his rage. It took him a second to place the emotion. Concern, and worry even. What the hell could scare off a man like Kal?

“He said he’d meet me half an hour ago, but he never showed. I assumed he stood me up.” Toby yelped when Kal angrily shoved him.

“My brother’s not that kind of man.” Kal snarled, eyes narrowed, dangerously flickering to amber. “Do you have any fucking idea how long he’s wanted you?”

“What?” Toby managed, eyes widening, his back hitting the wall of the hallway.

“Kal, what are you doing?” Sal appeared behind Kal, tugging his arm, but Kal’s gaze remained locked with Toby’s.

“Ever since the first time he fixed his gaze on you, he never looked at any other man. This is the only time I ever seen my brother take anyone so seriously. Only one reason why he’d back out.
